Digital Modes / Re: Digital Ham Radio

I ordered the Tigertronics USB interface from DX Engineering.  It should be here on Monday.  I am excited to test it out and run some PSK and JT65 with it.  I am sure I will need some help. I plan on using DM780 since that is what is installed on the computer for my FT2000.

I did a blog post on this a while back if anyone is interested. It's focused mainly for Ubuntu.

I've been meaning to get into Raspberry Pi. I can see a lot of cool possibilities with it in regards to radio.

Sure do.

Here's my station:

My antenna isn't too impressive. Just a stealth 20m dipole I built that's strung up on my porch.

... and the obligitory pic of my Commodore 64 setup.  ;D

I'm planning on getting this on the air with 2 meter packet.

Almost all my HF activity is PSK-31, and i still use AX.25 Packet on VHF fairly often.

Used to run RTTY, but really like PSK-31 using Digipan.

Check out this series of posts:

I am working on replicating this set up to use for mobile computing.  I will be using it to track APRS for a high-altitude balloon that a ham club is putting together, as well as high powered/high altitude rockets.

Technical Central / Re: Propagation...

Thanks for posting all the information.  Reading and understanding prop prediction and values is one thing I really need to work on.  Everyone is on the air now talking about a huge sunspot today.

Yes.  It is active sunspot region, NOAA AR Number 11785 (or, just 1785).  Click on the following image for the larger size...

The sunspot region may start producing x-ray flares, which result in nearly instant radio blackouts on the sunlit side of the Earth.  They don't last long; once the x-ray flare is over, the ionosphere begins returning to the pre-flare condition.

Some sunspot flares are also associated with a coronal mass ejection.  If the CME is directed toward the Earth (they are not always), then in two to three days after the CME erupts from the Sun, it could cause a geomagnetic disturbance or storm, which lowers the MUF of a given radio propagation path.

cheers...

I just ordered the Nooelec version.  To hard to pass up for $20 with antenna and remote.  Should be fun!

Welcome aboard Jason. Nice to have you on the forums!   Got any pictures of your antennas and station?
